CHOOSING THE RIGHT LAMP SHADE

While most people focus on the base of the lamp, the lamp shade itself will inevitably have just as much of an impact on the room you're trying to decorate or illuminate. Below is a list of things to consider when purchasing a lamp shade:
  • The room. Do you want your lamp to stand out or blend in with the style and color of the room it will be in?
  • The size. While there are many unusually sized lamps out there, the general rule is that your shade should be about 3/4 the size of your base and the bottom of your lamp shade should be wider than the widest part of the lamp base.
  • The light. How much light are you looking to get out of this lamp? If you want more, a light shade with a wider base would be the ideal choice.
  • The bulb. You don't want any burnt lamp shades, so choosing the right size of shade to fit the bulb inside while giving two to three inches of space is ideal.
  • The lamp base. Do you want your base to stand out or your lamp shade? You want a nice balance between the two, so if your base is bolder, you might want to go with a more subtle shade, and if the base is plain, consider going with a more intricately designed shade.
